 Marriages Licences - England

Marriage Licences in England were issued to couples giving them permission to marry without posting banns for the three weeks prior to the wedding in the church of their respective Parishes of residence. The Licences are made up of two documents, the allegation and the bond. They can provide important information including place of residence, age, marital status, occupation and father or guardian for those parties under 21 years of age.
They were most commonly used by :-
- the better off members of the Parish as a status symbol and also to avoid publishing their business to all and sundry in the Parish;
- couples marrying outside both of their respective Parishes of residence; or
- by those couples who couldn't or wouldn't wait the three week period for the posting of banns.
