Maria Wellbelove entered royal service as a Housemaid in 1854, and remained in that position until her retirement some time in the 1870's, by which time she had risen from 4th Class to 1st Class, and been transferred to Osborne. She was still receiving a pension in 1901, when Queen Victoria died, at which time her pension, like most of the others granted by the Queen, was taken on by the Government, and, consequently, she disappears from our records.

William Wellbelove was a labourer in the Royal Gardens at Windsor from c.1864 to 1872, when he retired with a pension. The next list of pensioners we have for his category of employee is dated 1897, and his name is not given.

  • John WELLBELOVE - Loss of the ship Northfleet January 22nd 1873.

John Wellbelove, aged 18, was amongst the casualties when the ship Northfleet was struck by the Spanish steamer Murillo as the Northfleet lay at anchor off Dungeness. See a full report on the Ships List at  http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Wrecks/northfleet1873.htm

John's age would make him born about 1855. There are two possibilities of who he was (that we know of) :-
John son of James & Mary, baptized at Egham - 9 Sep 1855.
John son of Daniel & Elizabeth, baptized at Virginia Water - 14 Oct 1855.
